Suzuka Phoenix cruises at Takamatsunomiya Kinen

first_imgTOYOAKE, Aichi Pref. – Top favorite Suzuka Phoenix outclassed the field to register a comfortable victory at the Takamatsunomiya Kinen on Sunday.She is Tosho led the 1,200-meter Grade One race coming into the final stretch but Suzuka Phoenix produced a devastating last burst to beat Peer Gynt by two-and-a-half lengths on the turf at Chukyo Racecourse in Aichi Prefecture. The 5-year-old clocked 1 minute, 08.9 seconds and gave star jockey Yutaka Take his third Takamatsunomiya Kinen win and first since guiding Admire Max to victory in 2005. The win was worth 95 million yen in prize money.“The horse is in good condition and handled the rough going well. We raced just the way I hoped we would,” said Take.Second-favorite Precise Machine was third while last year’s winner Orewa Matteruze finished in fifth position.Suzuka Phoenix’s win paid out 450 yen on a 100 yen wager.
